Accepted Items for Free E-Waste Recycling

CJD E-Cycling provides free e-waste recycling for electronics and metals at our Edwardsville, IL facility. Drop off Monday through Friday, 9am to 4:30pm, or Saturday, 9am to 1pm. A small number of items carry a handling fee, and a few materials cannot be accepted at all. Both lists are below.

Electronics Accepted for Recycling

The following electronics are accepted for free e-waste recycling at CJD.

Computers, towers, laptops, and associated peripherals
Monitors and flat screen displays
Printers, scanners, fax machines, and copiers
Phones, cell phones, and VoIP equipment
Servers, routers, switches, modems, and networking gear
Cable boxes, satellite receivers, and digital converters
Game consoles and gaming equipment
Audio/video equipment: VCRs, DVD players, stereos, and portable music players
Home electronics: toasters, blenders, microwaves, and similar appliances
UPS battery backups and communication equipment
Rechargeable NiMH and lithium-ion batteries
Holiday lights and metal decorations
Tablets, smartphones, e-readers, smartwatches, and fitness trackers
Digital cameras, camcorders, and GPS units
Drones and VR headsets
Smart home devices: smart speakers, video doorbells, security cameras, Wi-Fi routers, and mesh network nodes
Smart thermostats
Car stereos, amplifiers, and vehicle infotainment systems
Point-of-sale terminals, credit card readers, cash registers, and label printers
External hard drives
Paper shredders
Wireless headphones and portable media players

Metals Accepted for Recycling

The following metals are accepted at no charge.

White goods: washers, dryers, dishwashers, and furnaces
Medical and diagnostic equipment (call to verify before drop-off)
Industrial machinery and lawn equipment: tools, mowers, and tillers
Air conditioners and humidifiers
Motors, transformers, non-PCB electronic ballasts, and other electrical equipment
Lead-acid batteries: car batteries and lawn mower batteries
Non-ferrous metals and metal office furniture: desks, file cabinets, and similar
Power tools: drills, saws, sanders, grinders, welders, plasma cutters, and air compressors
Generators
Extension cords, power strips, and surge protectors
Vacuum cleaners, including cordless and robotic models
Metal furniture: bed frames and patio furniture

Items Accepted With a Fee

The following items carry a handling fee. Call ahead at (618) 659-9006 to confirm current pricing before your drop-off.

CRT televisions (tube TVs)
Console televisions
Plasma televisions
Projection televisions
CRT monitors and flat screen monitors without a tower
Alkaline batteries
Rechargeable batteries: NiCd, Li-Ion mixed, lithium, and lithium primary
Dehumidifiers and refrigerators
Lamps and light bulbs

Flat screen TVs are accepted at no charge. If you have sufficient volume of other materials, fee items may be waived.

Items We Cannot Accept

To keep our recycling stream clean and compliant, CJD cannot accept the items below. If you do not see your item here or on the accepted lists above, call before you come.

Construction materials and non-electronics: roofing, wood, dirt, tires, office waste, and similar debris
Textiles and fabric
Vapes and pens
DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, and cassette tapes
Re-manufactured ink or toner
Radioactive or flammable materials
Hazardous materials such as oil, antifreeze, and paint
Household smoke detectors
Explosives, firearms, ammunition, and shells
PCB-containing capacitors, transformers, and ballasts (non-PCB ballasts and transformers are accepted)
Prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs, and illegal drugs
Devices containing mercury
Equipment containing asbestos, radioactive components, or infectious or pathological waste
Other hazardous materials such as pesticides, oil filters, air bags, lead, and mercury switches

Data-Bearing Devices

Data-bearing devices are handled on-site through physical destruction or sanitization based on device type. If CJD does not have on-site capability for a specific device, it is securely shipped to a vetted R2v3-approved downstream vendor. Certificates of recycling are available on request.
